Many twists and turns took place in the development of this Spanish Dancer styled quilt, and the music of Andres Segovia helped cultivate the finished product. Gathered satin ribbon enhances the dancer's dress. The swirls of the painted background invite energy and motion to the quilt. It was machine quilted both digitally (outer border) and using free-motion.
The floral motif on the guitar was hand embroidered using 2 strands of Sulky polyester thread. Buttonhole stitch appliqueing the fushia pink accent was hand stitched with 2 strands of variegated Sulky thread.
Sulky Metallic thread was used for the guitar strings, the monogram on the headstock, and the dancer's jewelry. Teal buttons were used for the tuning pegs of the guitar and crystals adorn the quilt for an extra sparkle.
The challenge fabric was used in the pieced and appliqued background as well as on the guitar and in the dancer's fan.
To challenge my self the quilt was finished with with a curved piped binding in a contrasting orange.
I dedicate this quilt to my son, Andres, who was named after the famous classical guitarist.
Surprisingly, Segovia was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2014 Hoffman Challenge. It will be going on tour in trunk G for the next 14 months.
It's so much fun to attend the Rocky Mountain Quilt Show and view all the entries up close and personal.
This beautiful ribbon will come home with my quilt in October 2016.
